The gearbox is a functional used gearbox which was removed a number of years ago from a running BMW M6 -1985 or 1986 or possibly even 1987? Note: the gearbox is NOT from an accident or wrecked vehicle. The gearbox was held on to for other unrealised purposes because this is a particularly very rare optional sport gear box, later M6 productions used the 280 Getrag.

There is little or very minimal input shaft movement demonstrating the good condition of the first input bearing.

The original thrust bearing with the gearbox spins freely and has no noise.

The two mounting tags are original and undamaged. 

The green and yellow tape shown on the input driven shaft and tail shaft coupling in some photos are to demonstrate that one input turn is matched with one tail shaft drive turn when fifth gear is selected. The close ratio 5 speed has been called a 262 because that section of the gearbox is the shared first section of housing with the earlier 4 speed Getrag gearboxes stamped on the casing (as shown in the photos) and that’s why they were referred to as such but the 265/5 also shared the same housing. This rare gear box has 4 sections that includes bell-housing, first section, fifth gear housing and end cover. The gearbox comes with tail shaft drive coupling as shown in photos of the gearbox, clutch thrust bearing and gear shift mount. The gear box does not come with a gear stick or gear stick knob. We are unsure of the exact year but it is a mid plus production example, as it does not have the mechanical speedometer drive unit in place but one could be added or switched if needed quite simply by removing the blanking plug from the outside of the unit and a drive unit installed.
